Nutrition is not WHAT you eat - It's what you ABSORB.
Nutrition can be broken down into the 3 stages of Diet, Digestion and then Absorption of the nutrients.
DIET - Is what you choose to eat.
DIGESTION - Is what gets broken down in your gut.
ABSORPTION - Is the process of actually assimilating the nutrients into your body
Digestion refers to our body separating molecules and breaking them up into more complex substances. It also sorts and divides molecules by type, then sends them to be used or stored in our body
It also arranges, transports or excretes whatever the body needs, or doesn't need.
In other words, we just chew and swallow, then the food gets pulled apart and the nutrients get transported to where they need to go, without us even having to think about it.
Watch Out for leaky plumbing
When it comes to your diet, it's important to focus on consuming foods that have a low HI index as I mentioned in a previous video.
Your digestive function will then determine how much of the nutrients from the food will be available for your body to utilise.
If your digestion isn't working properly it's kind of like having leaky plumbing all through your house. There's plenty of water going in, but not much coming out - and lot's being lost along the way.
And stress is like turning up the water pressure - which will only cause the leaks to increase.
If you feel like you might be experiencing digestive issues you can start by tracking when your symptoms occur, including things like:
-What your symptoms feel like and when they happen
-Type of food or drink consumed
-Whether you had a stressful day
And you can try small changes like eating low HI foods, consuming pre and pro-biotics, eating slowly and mindfully, drinking more water and exercising more regularly.
But if you are experiencing regular digestive symptoms, I would also recommend finding a qualified nutrition expert to work with.
